Ingres'advice to his students :
"Bow your knee before what is beautiful, Consider that man was made in the image of God himself ; that it is difficult to catch his likeness, because God himself wanted that Eve be different from Adam and that Adam be different from every other man. But at the same time, realise that it is easy, because no other being is so dear to you, so present, so familiar."
Kate Chartier is a classically trained portrait artist based in Paris working with an international clientele. She was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, London, in 2005.
Formal portrait commissions are preferably painted from life which requires a minimum of six half-day sittings. These may take place in the artist's Paris studio or in the client's home.
While the photograph fixes the immediacy of an instant in time, the painted portrait steps back and reflects, searching for the hidden depths of the personality.
Kate Chartier succeeds with brilliance in capturing a likeness with sensitivity, subtlety and respect intuitively seeking a representation both relevant to our time, yet timeless.
Lavinia Culverhouse, Royal Society of Arts, London.
In painting, as in sculpture, the portrait remains the most complex discipline, and because of this, the most difficult to achieve. The artist must capture the character of his model while simultaneously searching for the subtle impermanence of his likeness.
Kate Chartier's portraits are a response to those who wish to rediscover the great tradition of portraiture thanks to the artist's perfect observation and infallible classical technique.
